For charter she will offer her passengers a different way of life and a different form of sailing. What she offers is a journey in the past, where the comfort was designed to accompany the irregular motion of the sea, where every detail reminds you that you are on a ship, and where the cozy interior protects you from the elements and surrounds you with an environment built with noble materials, mainly wood, leather, and bronze. In other words, step on board "SS Alice" and you feel ready for the wildest exploration.
The comfort aboard "SS Alice" is designed for safety, practicality and to enjoy a good sailing journey. Your welcome aboard starts at the foot of the starboard gangway, suspended from a davit, and leads you to the upper deck. While on the upper deck you will see the 15' tender on davits, the numerous mahogany skylights, the typical orange painted cowl vents, the huge smoke stack with the wheelhouse forward and, of course, the two masts. You are stepping on a solid pine deck ready for you to enjoy the outside world of a sailing ship, or just dining al fresco under a off-white canopy in between the two masts after a refreshing sailing day. From the main companionway, forward of the wheelhouse, an elegant mahogany staircase guides you into a lobby and aft of it, you will enter the dining saloon to starboard and the salon itself on the port side. The salon has a deep U shaped sofa and a desk. The dining salon is large enough to comfortably seat eight people. For both the salon and the dining saloon, a skylight and porthole gives plenty of natural light. A detail found throughout the ship are the big cast iron radiators, found in every cabin, which remind you comfort has been taken very seriously but with an old fashion twist. The captain's or the owner's quarters are situated aft of the salon. This is a self contained apartment, with a double berth, a writing deck, a very comfortable L shaped sofa for official or social conversation, a single enclosed berth and a huge desk full size chart table with all the equipment for communication and navigation. Of course, it enjoys a full size bathroom and a direct access to the upper deck. Back to the lobby, on the starboard side of the dining salon a door goes to the galley and on the port side is located the pantry with the freezers and refrigerators. Another door gives access to the engine room down below. Forward from the lobby a passage gives access to the four-guest cabin. Each one is a double occupancy with ensuite bathroom, double or hi-lo berth and hanging locker. In the middle of the guest passage, a staircase gives access to the crew's quarters on the lower deck. The crew enjoys a cozy small salon area with a galley corner, and a comfortable double occupancy cabin and a full size bathroom that also serve as a laundry room. Forward of the crew area are the paint room, the bosom room and the storage area. Also on the lower deck, aft of the crew's quarters, are the fuel oil tank, the engine room, with the main engine, the generator, furnaces, water pressure system, filters, fresh water generator and enough storage space for all the spar pieces and tools. A workbench with a lathe is also provided. She is rigged as a brigantine with three square sail on the foremast. Because the square sails are on rail, there is no need to go aloft for furling. Every maneuver can be done from the safety of the deck. Another version of "SS Alice" is rigged as a ketch. This version is designed specially for oceanographic and research programs. Her accommodations are quite different. Her lower deck is completely reserved for cold storage and a scientific laboratory. The main deck is shared between a permanent crew of four including the captain, the engineer, the second mate and the cook, and space for four scientists/instructors, and twelve students. A mess room, three heads with showers and a galley complete her accommodations. The fact that she is an auxiliary vessel with simple rigging makes here very economical to run and to maintain. The main deck is constructed to be watertight with a watertight hatch giving access to the lower deck. On the upper deck the tenders will be inflatables or semi rigid types (Zodiac). Her large volume spaces on a relatively small ship make her very suitable for this kind of program. |
